When the currency exchange rates fluctuate, it can make a huge difference to your travel plan.  Hollywood celebrities can do whatever they want but for the rest of us, it means making different choices.  According to the author of the book "Make Your Travel Dollars Worth a Fortune," there are solutions that will minimize the pain for tourists, however. By using the right Photo of the statue in Boston Commons public gardenstrategies and making good decisions, travelers can avoid paying inflated prices caused by currency shifts.

Visit Latin America:  For the most part, countries south of the border (Panama, Honduras, Roatan, Mayan ruins, Utila, Los Cabos) are a safe currency bet. Most Latin American countries tie their currency to the dollar officially or in practice and three actually use the U.S. dollar as their own. There has been little to no loss of value in most areas of this vast region and many countries in Central and South America offer an excellent value at all budget levels.

Pick European destinations carefully:  Europe (Ponza, Venice, Milan, Paris, Rome) is an expensive destination even with a strong dollar.  So expand your horizons and visit areas where demand has not driven prices to such lofty levels. Eastern Europe and Turkey are still far cheaper than Western Europe, especially outside the big cities. Portugal and rural Spain are a good 30 to 40 percent less expensive than nations to the north.

Visit domestic surprises:  America is a big country and while foreigners come and explore our hidden gems, we fail to do the same.  So if you have never been to New England, take a trip.  Or how about going to the Southwest and exploring New Mexico or Arizona ?  If you live in a warm place, then head to the north and experience snow and winter sports in Lake Tahoe.  Shop around for cheaper fares and be adventurous.

Be flexible on lodging:  Because large hotels have brand recognitions and easier-to-find websites, they keep their prices high.  Once you choose the destination, start your search on the web and look for smaller, less-known, locally owned hotels, inns, and short-term rentals.  They are often much cheaper and you are bound to experience local life rather than sleeping in a hotel that looks exactly like the one in your town.
