maya civilization, copan, honduras

Richard Gere, his wife Carey Lowel, and their son enjoyed a relaxing vacation in this Central American country.  The family visited Copan, the ruins of a city that is famous for being the center of culture, science, and arts for the Mayan civilization.  Mel Gibson was so intrigued by the Mayan Civilization that the film Apocalypto is being filmed there.

Richard and his wife visited one of the most famous Mayan temples, Rosalila.  They were also seen enjoying themselves in the pool and drinking beer.

Richard Gere stayed at the Hotel Marina Copán (in Copán Ruinas), the same hotel where John John Kennedy stayed during his honeymoon years ago.  According to hotel employees, Richard acted as any other tourist.  He and his family enjoyed traditional Honduran food, such as pupusas de loroco, chicken with loroco (loroco is a flower eaten in Central America), plantains, and refried beans.

According to one of the waitresses at the Marina Hotel, Richard is charming, but he did not look as handsome as he does in the movies.  Oh, how disappointing!

After Copan, Richard took a flight to the Caribbean Island of Roatan.  Roatan is known for having the second largest coral reef in the world.  They spent their weekend there.

This was not Richard’s first visit to Honduras; he went there in the early 1980s on a humanitarian mission.

Honduras is a relatively unknown travel destination, but is frequented by celebrities for this very reason.  The beaches are virgin, there is little commercialization, and camera-toting tourists do not bother celebrities.  It has great beaches and natural beauty, and relatively speaking, it is significantly cheaper than other popular Caribbean destinations like Nevis Island, Barbados, Anguilla, and St. Barths.
