Mel Gibson and Mayan civilization ruins

After the mega hit “The passion of the Christ,” Mel Gibson is again igniting his passion.  This time Mel is working on a movie about the Mayan civilization set 500 years ago.  In Mel’s tradition, the movie will try to represent the life in that era in its most natural form (including the dialogues being in the ancient Mayan dialect).

We are all familiar with the Mayan Riviera in Mexico which Cancun is part of.  Well, this is the area of the new movie called “Apocalypto.”  The Mayan world extends beyond the Riviera and covers vast lands with incredible landscapes in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and Belize.

The Mayan ruins are impressive and nested amidst dense tropical jungles.  The terrain is ideal for adventure vacations for nature lovers and is still one of the best kept secrets.  The ruins are not very close to the Caribbean Sea but they close enough to also have a beach vacation and visit the ruins at the same time.

Maybe that was the reason Richard Gere chose it as his family's vacation spot.

There is also plenty of eco-tourism in the region.  In the beach resort towns, though, there is a lot of night activity, good fresh food, scuba diving (the area has the second largest coral reef in the world) and good weather.  No wonder then that Roatan, Honduras is paradise if you are on a honeymoon.

Probably the most exotic and lower priced vacations in the Mayan world are in Honduras and Belize.  Whether you go see the movie Apocalypto or not, the Mayan world is definitely worth a vacation.
