Maple Palm movie review
Photo of two lesbians in the movie Maple Palm
People can have different views about illegal immigrants but one group of people have no right to immigrate at all legally:  gays and lesbians.  When an American citizen marries (hetrsexual) a non-American, the spouse is able to enter the United States legally and eventually become an American.  The same privilege is not available to those Americans who choose the spend the rest of their lives with a person of the same sex.  Even if you are legally married in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (where gay marriage is legal), the privilege to enter or live in the US legally is not available.  Such situations are not as uncommon as you would think.  Britain's Elton John and Canada's David Furnish and American Ellen DeGeneres and her Australian born partner Portia de Rossi are two good cases.

Actor and producer Robert Feldman has produced a movie called Maple Palm that dramatizes the story of a lesbian couple of fifteen years concealing the secret that one is an illegal immigrant. At times, the film is raw and disturbing, depicting the harsh and sometimes violent truth of these difficult circumstances. Yet the filmmakers insist that, at its core, Maple Palm is a love story, albeit a tragic one.  Strongly recommended to anyone who appreciates freedom and believes in love.
