If you need an excuse to visit California (make sure you combine it with trips to Hollywood and Malibu), here is one:  attend the Official John Wayne Centennial Celebration, a highlighted feature of the 8th Annual Newport Beach Film Festival.  In his honor, the city will commemorate the Duke’s 100th year with screenings of the movies that made him a star, including “The Sands of Iwo Jima” (1949), “Rio Bravo” (1959), and “The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance” (1962).

The Newport Beach Film Festival hosted the world debut of Oscar-winning “Crash” in 2005 and has more than 350 films from around the world scheduled in this year’s line up. Glamorous premiers, star-studded galas and yacht parties surround a variety of feature films, shorts, documentaries and animations, complemented by screening of some of John Wayne’s most famous films.  A lot of Hollywood celebrities will attend.
