Starting with my allbum of billboards from Target, the Weatherproof Garment Company, and free business checking, this one from film and digital camera company Eastman Kodak should definitely make you smile. Isn't she a cute girl? |

If you saw my billboards of Weatherproof Garment Company and Target then you might be wondering why I would feature a bland sign like this essentially touting nothing unique (apparently business checking is free at every bank. Look closely, my friend. See those men at the bottom on top of a crane platform installing the FREE sign. Stumped! They aren't real human being installing the massive billboard. They are mannequins. |

We are all used to pulling the curtains, closing the doors, and doing whatever we can while changing clothes. Should the same courtesy be allowed to the mannequins? It seems that at least at the 5th Avenue store of H&M in New York City, you will be forced to respect the privacy of the mannequins. |

One of the things that I always recommend is that if you visit a historic city, then to the extent possible, try to stay in a hotel with personality. That is why I recommended the Copley Plaza hotel in Boston or the Chateau Marmon hotel in Hollywood or the Shore Club Hotel on South Beach in Miami. In New York City, I have recommended hotels like Soho Grand Hotel. Let me take this opportunity to also suggest that you try to stay at least for one night in the world-famous Plaza Hotel right on Fifth Avenue and walking distance to Central Park. I took this photo of the hotel and the surrounding skyline from the park.

Here in New England, one of the things that we know and really appreciate is good (and that generally means warm) weather. Each day when the temperature is warm for that time of the year, we like to enjoy it, preferably outdoors.
New York City is the same. For all whose people holed up in their tiny apartments of cubicles in high-rise offices, each weekend day of sunshine is worth as much as a trip to Nevis Islands. That is why it is nice to see people shedding their clothes and changing into swimsuits to get that perfect tan (I want to warn, though, that you should always wear sunscreen and overexposure to direct sun accelerates aging). In Boston area, where I live, it is common to see such sights in Boston Commons or on the Esplanade next to Charles River.

So when I talked about the Hearst Tower, I was talking about my fascinating with high-rise buildings (no, I am not afraid of heights and at one time I used to work in the Hancock Tower on the 33rd floor with spectacular views of Boston). I thought I will share some of my favorite photos of skyscrapers in New York City. This is the Time Warner Center, a beautiful building with a mall on the lower floors (in other words, the public is welcome).

In the skyscraper below, the public is welcome in the sense that it is the Trump Hotel and Tower, but if you are intimidated by the idea of going inside a luxury hotel if you are not staying there (my technique to check out hotels that are too expensive for me to afford is to go for a cup of coffee during daytime (I did that at the Omm Hotel in Barcelona) or to the bar at night), you can still admire it from the street. It is right in the Columbus Square area.

They don't call New York City as the city of skyscrapers for nothing. Among the many buildings, Hearst Tower is one of my favorites. It is a 46-story glass-and-steel building rising 597 feet from within its landmark six-story base. Hearst Tower is the first occupied office building in New York City to achieve the coveted Gold rating under the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program. If you want to take a look walk to Eighth Avenue between 56th and 57th Streets.

If you don't do your homework before visiting New York city, you could end up paying a lot of money for lousy food. NYC has some of the best restaurants in the world (I ate recently at Leela Lounge) but it also has some of the worst food in the world. I mean what can you expect from Mexican immigrants cooking Japanese food without ever visiting Japan or Chinese immigrants cooking Thai food? That is why it is best to stick to a few fine places and not take chances. There are just too many tourist traps. If you don't know where to eat, take my advice and try the Little Italy neighborhood. The prices are really good at lunch time and be careful while ordering. I like Ristorante Italiano Da Gennaro.
I also like Sal Anthony's restaurant where they specialize in gnocchi, if that is your favorite Italian dish.

The other place to get awesome food is Il Fornaio and right next to it, the Sorrento.

On Project Runway, when Heidi Klum chimes in all the time that "In fashion, one day you are in, and the next day, you are out," it sounds quite cheesy (I could say the same about any other field) but it is so true. Kira Plastinina was a Russian teenager who designed some playful clothes for teens and young women, and the marketers made her into a star. Suddenly, she was everywhere and was intereviewed on TV as if she was Warren Buffet. After hearing all the hoopla, I went to her boutique in New York City and I must say that while clothes were interesting looking but some of them looked as if they came out of an Old Navy (these people will not design and sell such garments because vast majority of American women will not be able to wear such funky clothes) factory. The prices were outrageous too and I didn't see the value. No surprise then that Kira is back to her Russian roots and has pretty much disappeared from the rest of the world.

No offense against the Indians, but their food in America is generally awful. The all-you-can-eat buffet maybe cheap but no matter where you go, all dishes look and taste the same. There is absolutely no creativity, and I cannot imagine that in a country of over one-billion people, there are just a handful of dishes cooked in the same sauce. Thankfully, during my trip to India, I learned that there is lot more to Indian cuisine than what you eat in your neighborhood lunch place. And since people like me complained, entrepreneurs are stepping in with more sophisticated restaurants and that is where I put Leela Lounge. It has the ambiance of an upscale restaurant in a metropolitan city in India, and while they could improve the service, it is overall an exotic experience. |
